Process Group Therapy has a long tradition of providing a means for people to learn from peer interaction in a social laboratory. Testing out interpersonal strategies in a real world setting allows clients to see what works for them. A process group learns from each other and grows over time integrating the more successful strategies.
Combining process groups with play therapy accelerates this process. Play encourages a higher degree of creativity and flexibility that expands the opportunities to take more risks. Dungeons & Dragons as a role-playing game offers the perfect medium for individuals to explore new ways of being.
Play gives us the chance to try new things with little concern for major consequences but with more chances to try a wider variety of strategies. Eventually giving us insight into what works best for us.
Social play paired with the in-game consequences of Dungeons & Dragons produces real-time feedback opportunities for genuine growth. The Table Top Role-Playing genre has been providing people with these experience for decades. Over the last ten years, therapist-gamers have combined the tools from psychology with these expansive and creative systems to create therapeutic growth experiences.
Using the Game-To-Grow method, I lead a small band of group members on an adventure to discover unknown lands, solve problems and resolve conflicts. Along the way they will discover more about themselves and each other that they will be able to integrate into their everyday lives.

“Why do you go away? So that you can come back. So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colors. And the people there see you differently, too. Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving.” |
