Frequently Asked Questions
Are you a parent? |
Yes, I have three boys. I can honestly say that while being a parent is one of the hardest things I've ever done, it is most certainly the greatest thing I've ever done. I'm a proud dad and I am always astounded at what my kids have to teach me every day.

What is your fee? |
Please contact me to receive a quote on fees. This will depend on the type of services you are seeking. When you call please let me know what you are looking for (group therapy, individual therapy, trauma therapy, or consultation) and if you have a time frame in mind. If you are unsure I can provide you with some options. I do carry some sliding scale fee slots, please ask about availability when you reach out.
|
What is your availability? |
My availability changes depending on my current caseload. I see clients in the mornings, afternoons and evenings. Please call me to see which slots are currently open. For clients in weekly therapy we will agree on a regular meeting time that will be your time. I will advise you with as much notice as I can give if I will be away (on vacation/at a conference) so that we can reschedule or plan accordingly. Meetings in the home, at school, or off-site can be scheduled pending availability.

How do I get reimbursed? |
As an out-of-network insurance provider for insurance plans and carriers, I can provide you with a statement of services (known as a "superbill"), which you can submit to your insurance for reimbursement. In this case, most insurance companies will reimburse you directly for treatment. Please note I do not bill insurance directly and you will be ultimately responsible for the full fee. If you are interested in receiving reimbursement you may want to call your insurance company first and ask the following questions:
- Are out-of-network providers of mental health services covered? - If so, what amount or percentage of sessions are covered? - What is the customary rate and is it representative of costs in my area? - Is there a limit to the number of sessions that may be covered? - Is pre-authorization required? - What information do they require for reimbursement? |
Is therapy tax deductible? |
Yes! Under the Affordable Care Act changes were made on what expenses are tax deductible. If you itemize your tax deductions and have significant medical expenses (including health insurance premiums), you can deduct the cost of therapy. This is especially helpful for families who have children with special needs. Speak to a tax consult and review IRS FAQ on medical expenses and IRS publication 502. I can provide a list of services for your record keeping.

Are you on any panels? |
At this time I am not on any insurance panels. Most of the clients I see prefer the anonymity and full confidentiality that out of pocket payment provide. Insurance companies collect the frequency of visits, the types of visits, diagnosis codes (required for medical necessity), treatment plans, and have access to progress notes, treatment summaries and diagnostic assessment evaluations. Coupled with the low reimbursement rates, the amount of paperwork and high denial rate makes insurance reimbursement cost prohibitive for many psychologists. I support policy efforts by the American Psychological Association and the California Psychological Association to make mental health services more accessible.
