"If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude."
―Maya Angelou
“In the end these things matter most:
How well did you love?
How fully did you live?
How deeply did you let go?”
― Jack Kornfield

What is Family Therapy?

Picture
In family therapy, the focus of clinical attention is the whole family. I love family therapy because it is inherently empowering and not interested in "blame" or ascribing fault to any particular individual. The work in family therapy is all about the dynamic and how that meets the needs of every individual in the family. This means that sessions are targeted based on what the family needs. Sometimes sessions are with one child, all the siblings, just the parents, the entire family, or some combination in between.

Collaboration is at the core of family therapy. Everyone works together to understand each other's needs, express their own needs, and come to an agreement about what happens next so that everyone gets what they need.

Sometimes, a family is interested in therapy for the family when another individual (child or adult) is already in their own therapy. I work collaterally with other therapists to work towards a common goal.

Parenting Help

Often parents need their own support system to develop skills that are specific to their child. Every child is different; some are born with different temperaments than their parents--or in some cases too similar! Working together we can create a customized "toolkit" to help you get "unstuck." If the issue is more ingrained and requires intervention, family therapy with the parents and children together can be transformative.

Alternatively, a parent consultation is a time-limited number of sessions (determined at the outset) with a very specific problem to solve. This can include getting help with understanding psychological and school evaluations.
